MAWS is hosting a raffle for two unique and beautiful spinning and weaving baskets. Tickets are $3, $10 and $20 for these fantastic gifts. You can purchase your tickets early and pick them up at the Conference, or buy them at the door. You do not need to be present to win. Rug Twining with Katy Duncan FRI.ALL.1
Rug twining is an ingeniously simple craft, very humble but potentially dazzling! The materials
are practically free (fabric scraps) and the results are durable, heirloom quality floor coverings.
Twining uses two weft strips, woven across the warp, and completely hides the warp so that any yarn or fabric can be used.
Materials used for the rugs range from clothesline cord to cast-off blue jeans, wool, velour, and
beyond. Any fabric can be used. The end result is a very sturdy rug that lasts and lasts. Often weavers use homemade looms made out of inexpensive, simple materials.
In this class students will learn: Warping the twining loom, simple patterning using the two weft strips.
Selvedge techniques and fabric strip cutting.

Would you like to expand your textile color knowledge? In this class you will experiment with painting on silk using textile paints, experiment with ice and solar dying.
Silk Painting: Is not as difficult as you may think. The fun of silk painting is experimenting with techniques to create the images you want. Your Imagination is your only limitation.
Ice Dying: the fabric, dye powders, and ice are layered. As the ice melts the dye powders mix with the melting ice and dye the fabric with fantastic patterns.
Solar Dying: Experience using the heat of the sun to color your yarn and fabric.

Learn to spin magical art yarns. Beehives, caterpillars, beaded shooting stars, and fairy fluff are some of the art yarns you will have the pleasure to spin. Students will review the parts of the spinning wheel and spindles and their function. Delve into the “mathematics” behind determining ratio with drive whorls as well as the use of drive belts. When spinning, we will discover how to choose the proper materials for the drafting technique.

Master Weaver Maude Knudsen gives a show and tell seminar covering possibilities for turned drafts and/or supplemental warps suitable for fabrics, scarves, table runners, and more. Discussion includes designs covering threading drafts, materials, and setts. Many, many examples to view.

Spirit Dolls with Odette Grassi FRI.PM.9
Create a unique wrapped doll! Learn a basic structure and work with mixed media options to create your own Spirit Doll. Fiber, beads, and paperclay are all part of the process. If you have a special amulet or charm that you would like to add, feel free to bring it with you. The class includes all supplies needed with many embellishment options provided.

Toothbrush Rag Rugs using Nälbinding with Denise Jackson FRI.PM.10
We’ll use a nälbinding technique to make our toothbrush coasters. The rug versions wear like chain-mail. I’ll provide the “needle.” You bring about one yard of fabric for starters. We’ll rip the strips in class. It can be new or old fabric (I used old fabric from my aunt for mine). We’ll learn the math and design involved to determine size and shape.

Learn how to turn a simple knit stocking cap into an attention grabber! In this class participants will learn how to "knit in" locks of wool, mohair, and bits of this and that.
A stocking cap with the ribbing completed will be supplied. Students will need to bring circular and double point needles in size 7, or the size they would use for worsted weight yarn. Dyed wool locks and misc. yarns will be provided. Students may bring their own locks, thrums, & novelty yarns to play with. Must know how to knit in the round.

Sett, or the number of ends per inch a weaver chooses for her warp, influences the ultimate suitability of the handwoven cloth for it intended use. In this seminar, we will explore both the dramatic and subtle effects a change in sett can have on cloth woven in 5/2, 10/2, 16/2, and 20/2 cotton yarns. Many handwoven samples will be available to see and touch, including the shining stars of triumph, a few real dogs and some that just provide food for weaverly thought!

Our afternoon portion will focus more on “baubles”. This class is designed to give you bits of hands-on experience and LOTS of ideas! As well as some tips for when/how to make the most of embellishments. A full day of color, texture, and play!

Make beautiful designer batts from 7 different fibers plus adding bling to make it sparkle. We will use hand cards and a drum carder to create natural and colored batts. Learn how to card fiber for making worsted and woolen yarn. Bring your spinning wheel or drop spindle to spin up a portion of each blended batt. We will then knit or crochet a sample scarf from your spun yarn. Weavers bring small loom and dry felters, your needles/foam.
Students should bring hand cards, if they have them. Spinning wheel or drop spindle to test the finished batts. Crochet hook or knitting needles to knit up a swatch. Weavers to bring small loom or cardboard and pins for pin weaving. Dry felters, please bring felting supplies of needles and foam.

Since the eighth century AD, the Japanese have used methods of shaping and securing cloth before dyeing to create intricate and beautiful patterns.
Four traditional Shibori techniques are taught in this full-day class: stitching, pole wrapping, clamping and knotting. Participants will receive three silk scarves with which to explore these systems. It’s fun, experimental, creative and - not surprisingly - no two results are alike.
WHAT TO BRING: notebook, eyeglasses(!), scissors, three old towels, rubber gloves. It would be nice to have several irons and boards, and a drying rack is always appreciated.
LEVEL: beginner—you don’t need to know anything about dyeing or Shibori in order to have a great time with this workshop!

colors, patterns and materials. The benefit of using the circular machine is that the stitching is even, and fast!
This class will cover a brief history of the sock machine, and what to look for when purchasing a machine. You will have the opportunity to see the machines in action, and see how easy it is to knit a sock and graft the toe.
Bring your questions, cameras, and your machine if you are lucky enough to have one!

This class is for individuals that have a sock machine and want to get started knitting socks, or brush
up on their skills. Yarn and gauge in relationship to cylinder size will be covered. In addition to
casting on, hem hanging, heel & toe turning, and two methods of Kitchener stitching. Sock yarn
will be available for purchase, or bring your own sock yarn.
This class is for individuals that have a sock machine and want to get started knitting socks, or brush
